Matchbox – Plymouth Gran Fury "Metro Police"

Scale model of a police car, the Plymouth Gran Fury "Metro Police" (also Plymouth Police Car), made by Matchbox. This example is reference 10, included in the "1–75 Superfast" series. It is made in England, possibly in 1982. Metal body painted in white and black, with printed details. Metal base, unpainted. Glazing represented in transparent, blue tinted plastic, with details molded in the windshield. Emergency lights in transparent, blue tinted plastic. Interior details in white plastic. Plastic wheels with "chrome" details simulating the rims. With suspension. License plate "116 VJI". The nominal scale is 1:72 and the overall length is approximately 3.1 in. About 1.4 oz. This model represents a police car based on the 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury A38. 

I remember well the day when, with enthusiasm, I bought this police car in a tobacco shop in the Lapa neighborhood in Lisboa, totally influenced by the tv series "Hill Street Blues" (1981–1987). However, later, at home, when I examined it, my enthusiasm waned. The body casting had obvious imperfections, as did the glossy, thick paint job – retouched with matte paint. Some of the printed details were blurry and even the union between the body and the base had gone wrong. At least this model was a good roller and over time I ended up forgiving its flaws. Today, forty years later, I accept it for what it was – a teardrop from the assembly line in Hackney, amidst disillusioned and sad workers, in the year that Lesney was declaring bankruptcy and the Matchbox brand was preparing to leave its homeland forever. ●

Lembro-me bem do dia em que, com entusiasmo, comprei este carro de polícia numa tabacaria no bairro da Lapa em Lisboa, totalmente influenciado pela série televisiva "Hill Street Blues" (1981–1987). Todavia, mais tarde, em casa, ao examiná-lo, o entusiasmo esmoreceu. O molde da carroçaria tinha evidentes imperfeições, assim como a pintura brilhante, espessa e retocada – com tinta mate. Alguns dos detalhes impressos estavam esborratados e até a união entre a carroçaria e a base tinha corrido mal. Pelo menos, este modelo era um bom rolador e com o tempo acabei por lhe perdoar os defeitos. Hoje, quarenta anos depois, aceito-o por aquilo que sempre foi – uma lágrima saída da linha de montagem em Hackney, por entre trabalhadores desiludidos e tristes, no ano em que a Lesney declarava falência e a marca Matchbox se preparava para deixar para sempre a sua terra natal. ●

●  As far as I remember, police cars on the "Hill Street Blues" tv series were either 1976 Dodge Monaco or Plymouth Fury models – not Plymouth Grand Fury. But the similarities were enough to motivate the purchase of the Matchbox miniature. Back to the eighties, the opening credits of the iconic tv series, retrieved from Classic TV Zone.
